Massey Ferguson 6.01.4E – HITCH: Issue With PTO Stub Shaft 1000 (HITCH)

Issue description

Triggered when the system detects an anomaly with the 1000 RPM stub shaft—most commonly, the sensor signal is missing, implausible, or contradicts the PTO speed selected by the operator in the cab.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the 1000 RPM (21-spline) stub shaft is fully seated and bolted flush against the PTO housing.

  2. Verify that the PTO speed selector switch in the cab is set to 1000 RPM to avoid a plausibility mismatch.

  3. Inspect the PTO stub shaft sensor face for a buildup of metallic debris, dirt, or thick grease that could block the signal.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the sensor for chafing, corrosion, or broken wires.

  5. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the DTC and engage the PTO without an implement attached to see if the code returns immediately or only under load.

Repair steps

  1. Remove the PTO Guard

    Unbolt and remove the master shield/guard surrounding the PTO stub shaft.

  2. Remove the Stub Shaft

    Remove the retaining bolts (typically 6 bolts, e.g., M10x20) holding the PTO stub shaft in place. Pull the 1000 RPM stub shaft straight out of the housing.

  3. Inspect the Shaft

    Check the inner end of the stub shaft (the sensor target area) for severe wear, rounding, or damage. If the shaft is damaged, it must be replaced.

  4. Replace the Sensor (If Faulty)

    If the shaft is in good condition but the code persists, the sensor is likely faulty. Disconnect the electrical connector from the PTO sensor, unbolt/unscrew the sensor from the rear housing, install the new sensor, and reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Reinstall the Stub Shaft

    Clean the mating surface. Insert the 1000 RPM stub shaft back into the housing, ensuring the splines engage fully.

  6. Torque Bolts

    Install the retaining bolts and torque them to OEM specifications.

  7. Finalize

    Reinstall the PTO guard. Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the 6.01.4E code, then run the tractor and engage the PTO to verify the repair.
