Massey Ferguson 6.02.06 – TRANS1: Issue With Rear PTO On/Off Solenoid Power Supply

An electrical fault—such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power—in the circuit that supplies voltage to the solenoid responsible for engaging and disengaging the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) clutch.

   Check the Harness: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the PTO solenoid on the transmission housing. Look for rub points, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

   Inspect the Connector: Unplug the solenoid and check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

   Test Coil Resistance: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. An infinite reading indicates an open internal coil (requires replacement), while a reading of 0 ohms indicates a dead short.

   Verify Power and Ground: With the key ON and PTO switch engaged (safely, with the engine off if possible via diagnostic mode), verify that the TRANS1 controller is sending 12V to the connector and that the ground circuit is intact.

   Check Hydraulic Fluid: Ensure the transmission/hydraulic fluid is clean and at the proper level. Contaminated fluid can cause the solenoid valve spool to stick, which sometimes throws electrical plausibility codes if the coil overheats trying to move a jammed valve.

   Prep the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, set the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Relieve Pressure

   Relieve any residual hydraulic system pressure by cycling the hydraulic remotes.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the PTO hydraulic solenoid valve on the side of the transmission housing (where the hydraulic lines route to the PTO clutch pack).

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid with brake cleaner to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve body when the part is removed.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical pigtail. Unbolt the retaining screws/nut holding the solenoid cartridge in the valve block and carefully pull it out.

   Install the New Part

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert it into the valve body and torque the retaining fasteners to OEM spec (do not overtighten, as this can distort the cartridge).

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the electrical plug, reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the PTO engagement from the cab. Check the mounting area for hydraulic leaks.
