Massey Ferguson 6.02.09 – Hitch Controller or Transmission Module 1 (TRANS1): Issue With PTO Circuit (Hitch) / PTO Switch Is On But The PTO Is Not Turning
Issue description
The control module has received a command from the in-cab PTO switch to engage the Power Take-Off, but the system detects that the PTO shaft is not actually rotating. This typically points to a failure in the PTO engagement circuit, which can be electrical (a faulty switch, damaged wiring, or a failed solenoid coil) or hydraulic (a stuck transmission PTO hydraulic solenoid valve preventing fluid flow to the PTO clutch).

Check the cause
Verify that the transmission/hydraulic fluid is clean and at the proper level. Low or contaminated fluid can cause the PTO solenoid valve to stick or fail prematurely.
Use a multimeter or diagnostic scan tool to verify the in-cab PTO switch is sending a consistent 12V signal when engaged.
Inspect the wiring harness running from the cab to the transmission PTO solenoid valve. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose connectors.
Verify that the PTO speed sensor is functioning. If the PTO is actually turning but the sensor is dead, the module will falsely trigger this code thinking the PTO is stationary.
Check the resistance of the Transmission PTO Hydraulic Solenoid coil. If it is open or shorted to ground, the solenoid must be replaced.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.
Relieve Pressure
Relieve any residual hydraulic system pressure.
Locate the Valve
Locate the PTO hydraulic solenoid valve, which typically mounts directly to the transmission housing where the hydraulic lines connect to the PTO clutch system.
Remove the Faulty Valve
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid. Unbolt and carefully remove the valve body. Have a catch pan ready for minor hydraulic fluid spillage.
Install the New Valve
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid. Seat it into the transmission housing and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.
Test
Start the tractor, allow hydraulic pressure to build, and test the PTO engagement at a low RPM to confirm smooth operation. Check for leaks around the new valve.
