Massey Ferguson 6.02.1E – Hitch Controller: Issue With PTO Circuit (Hitch)
Issue description
Indicates an electrical irregularity or malfunction within the Power Take-Off (PTO) control circuit. Common underlying conditions for PTO circuit faults include an open circuit, a short to ground, an overcurrent situation at the PTO solenoid, or a faulty PTO switch.

Check the cause
Verify the battery is fully charged (around 12.6V) and check the main power fuses for the PTO/Hitch control modules.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Hitch controller, the PTO cab switch, the fender-mounted PTO switch (if equipped), and the PTO solenoid for chafing, breaks, or loose connections.
Test both the cab momentary switch and the fender switch for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to +12V. Ensure no switch is stuck closed for longer than 30 seconds.
Test the PTO solenoid coil resistance using a multimeter. An open circuit reading regardless of lead orientation indicates a broken internal wire.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed or broken wires in the PTO circuit, repair the wiring harness and secure it away from pinch points.
Replace Faulty Components
If the PTO switch failed continuity testing, pop the switch out of the console/fender bezel, disconnect the pigtail, and plug in the replacement switch. If the PTO solenoid valve failed the resistance test, locate the valve on the transmission/hydraulic block, disconnect the electrical connector, unthread the old solenoid, and install the new OEM solenoid valve.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic interface tool to clear the stored DTCs from the Hitch controller.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and test the PTO engagement via both the cab and fender switches to ensure the fault does not return.
