Massey Ferguson 6.02.4B – HITCH: Issue With PTO Slipping (Hitch)

The tractor's controller has detected a discrepancy between the engine speed and the Power Take-Off (PTO) output speed. This indicates that the internal PTO clutch pack is slipping when the PTO shaft rotates slower than commanded under load.

   Check the hydraulic/transmission oil level and condition. Look for a burnt smell or heavy metal/friction material in the hydraulic filters, which strongly indicates a burnt-out clutch pack.

   Test the hydraulic pressure at the PTO valve. Low hydraulic pressure caused by a failing pump, internal leak, or faulty relief valve will cause the clutch to slip even if friction discs are healthy.

   Perform an electro-hydraulic clutch calibration via the tractor's dash/controls to resolve jumpy or slipping engagement modulation.

   Inspect the electro-hydraulic PTO engagement solenoid and valve for sticking or blockages that might restrict oil flow to the clutch pack.

   Drain Fluids

   Drain the transmission and rear axle hydraulic fluid.

   Access the PTO Housing

   Remove the rear PTO shield and unbolt the PTO output shaft housing at the rear of the tractor.

   Extract the IPTO Clutch

   Withdraw the IPTO clutch pack assembly from the rear transmission housing.

   Disassemble and Inspect

   Disassemble the clutch pack. Inspect the friction discs for wear, burning, or glazing. Inspect the steel separator plates for warping or heat spots.

   Replace Components

   Install a new complete clutch kit or replace the individual friction discs. Crucially, replace all hydraulic seals and O-rings inside the clutch pack housing, as hardened or blown seals are a primary cause of the pressure loss that leads to slipping.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the clutch pack and bolt the PTO housing back onto the rear axle.

   Refill and Calibrate

   Refill the system with the correct specification hydraulic fluid, install new filters, and perform a PTO clutch calibration before putting the tractor under load.
