Massey Ferguson 6.02.E2 – HITCH: Issue With PTO Speed Too Fast In ECO (Hitch)
Issue description
Triggered when the system detects that the PTO shaft is spinning faster than the safe threshold for ECO mode. This is most commonly caused by operator error (revving the engine too high while in ECO mode), but can also be caused by a faulty PTO speed sensor sending erratic high-speed signals, or a mismatch between the physical PTO gear selection and the electronic switch.

Check the cause
Verify Operator Habits: Confirm that the operator is not exceeding the recommended engine RPM (approx. 1,550-1,600 RPM) while the PTO is engaged in 540E or 1000E mode.
Check for Related Codes: Look for companion codes like 06.02.49, 06.02.4A, or 06.02.4C which indicate a mismatch between the PTO speed sensor reading and the selected speed switch, or a general PTO overspeed compared to engine speed.
Inspect the PTO Speed Sensor: Locate the inductive PTO speed sensor (usually mounted near the rear PTO output shaft/gearbox). Check the sensor face for metallic debris buildup, which can cause erratic speed readings.
Inspect Wiring: Check the wiring harness and connector at the PTO speed sensor for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage.
Verify the PTO Selector Switch: Ensure the physical PTO speed selector lever/switch is fully engaged in the ECO detent and that the electronic switch is accurately reporting the ECO state to the controller.

Connect Diagnostic Tool
Plug in a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic interface to read all active and stored DTCs across the HITCH and TRANS modules.
Monitor Live Data
View the live data for 'Engine Speed' and 'PTO Speed.' Run the tractor at idle and slowly increase RPMs. If the PTO speed reading jumps erratically or shows a high speed while the shaft is barely moving, the sensor is faulty.
Clean/Replace the PTO Speed Sensor
Disconnect the sensor harness. Unthread the inductive PTO speed sensor from the housing. If covered in metal shavings, clean it, reinstall, and retest. If the sensor is internally shorted or open (test resistance with a multimeter against OEM specs), replace it with a new unit.
Check the Solenoid (If TRANS1 variant)
If the diagnostic tool shows the code is actually logged in the TRANS1 module, inspect the Rear PTO On/Off Solenoid wiring for shorts to ground or power supply drops.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the DTCs from the HITCH module. Engage the PTO in ECO mode and slowly bring the engine up to the target 1,550 RPM to verify the code does not return and the PTO speed remains stable.
