Massey Ferguson 651.05 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EEM4: Injector Number 1 Low Amp Draw

Issue description

The engine controller has detected high resistance or a complete open circuit in the electrical circuit for the cylinder #1 fuel injector solenoid. Because the circuit is open, the injector cannot fire, which will result in an engine misfire, rough running, and heavily reduced engine power (Degradation Level 3).

Check the cause

  1. Check the solenoid valve connector at cylinder #1 for loose, pushed-out, or corroded pins.

  2. Disconnect the harness from injector #1 and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the injector's pins. If the reading shows infinite resistance (OL), the injector's internal coil is open.

  3. If the injector tests within specification, test the injector wiring harness for continuity between the ECU connector and the injector connector. Look for chafed, broken, or melted wires.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

    Ensure the machine is fully powered down before beginning electrical or fuel system work.

  2. Remove the engine covers/valve cover as necessary to gain access to the fuel injectors and the injector wiring harness.

    Clear access to the top of the engine to reach cylinder #1.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder #1 fuel injector.

    Prepare the injector or harness for repair/replacement.

  4. If the harness is faulty: Repair the broken wire or replace the engine fuel injector wiring harness.

    Address any open circuits found during the continuity test.

  5. If the injector is faulty: Replace the fuel injector.

    Clean the area around the injector to prevent debris from entering the cylinder. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line from the injector and cap the rail fitting. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and carefully extract the faulty injector. Install the new injector using new O-rings and copper sealing washers. Reinstall the hold-down clamp and high-pressure fuel line, torquing all fittings to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reconnect the electrical harness to the injector.

    Ensure the connector is fully seated and secure.

  7. Reconnect the battery.

    You may need to prime/bleed the fuel system depending on the engine model.

  8. Connect a diagnostic service tool to the tractor, save the error log, and erase the active EEM4 fault codes.

    Clear the ECU memory of the open circuit fault.

  9. Start the engine and verify that the misfire is gone and no fuel leaks are present.

    Confirm the repair was successful and the engine runs smoothly.
