Massey Ferguson 651.14 – Engine ECU (EEM4): Injector Number 1 Short Circuit

Issue description

The engine management system has detected a short circuit on the electrical circuit controlling the fuel injector for engine cylinder #1. This means there is an abnormal path of low resistance, either within the injector's internal solenoid, the connector, or the wiring harness. When this code is active, the engine will typically enter a severe derate mode (Degradation Level 3: 50% max power and speed limited to 1500 RPM) to protect the system.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to Injector #1. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or areas where the harness may be rubbing against the engine block and shorting to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at Injector #1. Check for oil intrusion, water, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the connection and cause a short.

  3. Resistance Test (Injector): Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of Injector #1. Compare this reading to a known good injector on the same engine (e.g., Injector #2). If the resistance on Injector #1 is significantly lower or reads as a dead short (near 0 ohms), the injector solenoid has failed internally.

  4. Harness Continuity/Short Test: With the ECU and injector disconnected, test the two injector control wires for continuity to ground and continuity to each other. If there is continuity where there shouldn't be, the harness must be repaired or replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Address the Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, repair the damaged section of wiring using heat-shrink connectors, or replace the injector pigtail/harness.

  3. Replace the Injector

    Clean the area around Injector #1 thoroughly to prevent debris from entering the cylinder or fuel rail. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the leak-off (return) line. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and carefully extract the injector. Install the new injector with a new copper sealing washer. Torque the hold-down clamp and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

  4. Program the Injector

    Every new common rail injector has a unique calibration code (IMA code) printed on top of it. You must use the WinEEM4 Service Tool (or an equivalent advanced diagnostic scanner) to program this new calibration code into the Engine ECU.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes from the ECU, and run the engine to verify the repair and check for fuel leaks.
