Massey Ferguson 653.14 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EEM4: Injector Number 3 Short Circuit

Issue description

The engine control module has detected a short circuit in the electrical circuit for the #3 cylinder's fuel injector solenoid. When this code is active, the engine will typically enter a severe derate mode (Derate Level 3) to protect the system.

Check the cause

  1. System Reset: Save the error log using a diagnostic tool, clear the codes, and turn the ignition off for at least 60 seconds. Restart the ECU. If the fault returns on the next drive cycle, proceed with physical checks.

  2. Visual Inspection: Check the wiring of the #3 injector solenoid valve, the connector, and the contact surfaces of the connector pins for oxidation, moisture, or physical damage.

  3. Harness Continuity Test: Measure the resistance between the injector solenoid connectors and the ECU connector to verify if the short circuit is in the engine wiring harness.

  4. Injector Swap Test: Swap the #3 diesel injector with an injector from another cylinder. If the fault code changes to the new cylinder (e.g., SPN 654 for Injector #4), the injector itself is internally shorted and defective. If the code remains at SPN 653 (Injector #3), the issue is in the wiring harness or the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative cable.

  2. Access the Injector

    Depending on the engine model, remove the valve cover/rocker housing to access the internal injector harness and the fuel injectors.

  3. Isolate the Short

    Disconnect the electrical connector from Injector #3.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic tests proved the harness was shorted, repair the chafed wires or replace the injector wiring harness.

  5. Replace Injector (If Applicable)

    If the injector failed the swap test, remove the high-pressure fuel line and the injector hold-down clamp. Remove the faulty injector and its copper sealing washer. Install the new injector with a new washer and torque the hold-down bolt and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly & Calibration

    Reinstall the valve cover and reconnect the battery. Use the WinEEM4 (or equivalent) service tool to clear the fault codes and program the new injector's trim/calibration code (barcode) into the ECU to prevent overfueling/underfueling codes.
