Massey Ferguson E653.14 – Engine ECU: Injector no. 3 Short circuit
Issue description
The engine control system has detected an electrical short circuit in the circuit for the fuel injector on cylinder number 3. This can be caused by a short within the injector's internal solenoid coil, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or wires shorting together.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the cylinder 3 injector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched cables that could cause a short to ground or short to each other.
Disconnect the injector harness and check the pins on both the injector and the connector for corrosion, moisture, or damage.
Test the electrical integrity of the injector's coil using a multimeter. Measure the resistance across the injector pins and compare it to a known good injector on the engine. Perform a ground-to-earth check to see if the internal coil has broken down.
Perform a swap test (Component Isolation): Clear the active codes. Swap the cylinder 3 injector with the cylinder 4 injector. Run the engine/crank to see if the code changes to E654.14 (Injector 4 Short Circuit). If the code follows the injector, the injector is internally shorted. If the code remains E653.14, the fault is in the wiring harness or the Engine ECU.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the battery isolator switch to prevent ECU damage or accidental shorts during repair.
Access the Injector
Remove the engine covers and any intake/exhaust piping obstructing the fuel rail and cylinder 3.
Address the Fault
If the wiring is faulty: Repair the damaged section of the harness using proper automotive-grade heat-shrink connectors, or replace the injector harness section. If the injector is faulty: Disconnect the electrical connector and the high-pressure fuel line from the injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and carefully extract the injector.
Install New Injector
Clean the injector bore thoroughly. Always use a new copper sealing washer at the base of the new injector. Seat the injector, torque the hold-down clamp to OEM specifications, and reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and electrical connector.
Bleed the Fuel System
Prime the fuel system to remove any air introduced during the repair.
ECU Calibration
Common rail injectors have a specific calibration code (IQA code) printed on the top. You must use a diagnostic tool (like AGCO EDT) to program this new calibration value into the Engine ECU so it can adjust fueling properly.
Clear Codes
Clear the E653.14 fault code from the ECU memory and test run the tractor to verify the repair.
