Massey Ferguson E654.14 – EEM4: Injector Number 4 Short Circuit

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical short circuit in the wiring or the internal solenoid of the fuel injector for cylinder number 4.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Error Log using the AGCO EDT to confirm if the short is isolated to Injector 4 or if an entire injector bank is shorting out (e.g., SPN 520240/520241).

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the EEM4 ECU to the #4 injector. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or areas where the harness may be rubbing against the engine block and shorting to ground.

  3. Disconnect the pigtail connector at the #4 injector and inspect for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  4. Measure the electrical resistance across the pins of the #4 injector solenoid using a multimeter and compare to a known good injector. A reading near zero ohms indicates an internal short.

  5. Perform a cylinder cutout test using the AGCO EDT service tool to verify the mechanical and electrical response of the injector.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize and Disconnect

    Turn off the ignition and wait at least 2 minutes for the EEM4 ECU to fully power down. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the #4 fuel injector and the high-pressure fuel lines to prevent dirt from entering the open fuel system.

  3. Remove the Injector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the #4 injector. Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt and carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  4. Install the New Injector

    Lubricate the new injector O-rings with clean engine oil. Seat the new injector into the bore and torque the hold-down clamp to the OEM specification.

  5. Reconnect Lines

    Reinstall the high-pressure fuel line. (It is highly recommended by the manufacturer to use a new high-pressure line once the old one is loosened, as the fittings deform to seal). Torque the line fittings to spec.

  6. Program the Injector (IQA Code)

    Reconnect the battery. Connect the AGCO EDT service tool to the tractor. You must enter the new injector's IQA (Injector Quantity Adjustment / Calibration) code into the EEM4 ECU. This code is printed on the top of the new injector. Failure to code the injector will result in poor running conditions and further fault codes.

  7. Test

    Clear the E654.14 / SPN 654 FMI 14 fault code from the ECU. Prime the fuel system, start the engine, and check for leaks and smooth operation.
