Massey Ferguson E656.05 – Engine ECU (Electronic Control Unit): Injector Number 6 Low Amp Draw

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has detected an open circuit or abnormally high resistance in the electronic circuit for the cylinder #6 fuel injector. The underlying condition is typically a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or an internal failure (open coil) within the injector's solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the #6 cylinder fuel injector for chafing, melted wires, or physical breaks.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the #6 injector and check for loose, pushed-back, or corroded pins. Ensure the connector is fully seated.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the terminals of the #6 injector solenoid. If the reading shows infinite resistance (OL), the internal solenoid has failed and the injector must be replaced.

  4. If the injector tests within normal resistance specs, test the continuity of the wiring harness between the injector connector and the ECU pinout to locate the open wire.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Clean the area around the #6 injector thoroughly to prevent debris from entering the engine block.

  2. Disconnect Lines

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the #6 injector. Carefully loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the injector. Cap the rail and line fittings immediately.

  3. Remove Injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head. (A specialized puller may be required if the injector is seized).

  4. Clean the Bore

    Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no old copper sealing washers or carbon deposits are left behind.

  5. Install New Injector

    Fit a new copper sealing ring to the new injector. Insert the injector into the bore.

  6. Reassembly

    Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (do not over-tighten) and plug in the electrical connector.

  7. Calibration

    Use a diagnostic service tool to enter the new calibration code (QR code) printed on the injector into the Engine ECU to prevent calibration fault codes.

  8. Final Steps

    Reconnect the battery, prime/bleed the fuel system, start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and clear the E656.05 fault code from the ECU.
