Massey Ferguson 656.14 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector Number 6 Short Circuit (ECU)

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine controller has detected an abnormal electrical current draw—specifically a short circuit—on the circuit responsible for firing the #6 fuel injector. This can be caused by a short in the wiring harness, a failed injector solenoid/coil, or (rarely) an internal failure of the injector driver inside the control module.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to Injector #6. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points where the wire might be shorting to the engine block (ground) or another wire.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at Injector #6. Check for oil/diesel intrusion, moisture, corrosion, or bent pins, which can bridge the connection and cause a short.

  3. Injector Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins on Injector #6. Compare this reading to a known good injector on the same engine (e.g., Injector #5). If the resistance is significantly lower or reads as a dead short (0 ohms), the injector coil has failed internally.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: Disconnect the harness from the ECU and the injector. Test the injector signal and return wires for continuity to ground and continuity to each other.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor’s negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the harness test revealed a short, repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the injector harness segment.

  3. Replace the Injector

    Thoroughly clean the area around Injector #6 to prevent debris from entering the cylinder. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head. Install the new injector, ensuring a new copper sealing washer is used at the base. Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line.

  4. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector to the injector and reconnect the battery.

  5. Clear Codes & Code Injector

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 000656.14 code. Note: Modern Bosch common rail injectors feature a QR code/trim code that must be programmed (coded) into the Engine ECU using a diagnostic tool so the ECU knows the exact flow characteristics of the new injector.

  6. Test Run

    Start the engine, check for fuel leaks around the high-pressure line, and verify the misfire/code does not return.
