Massey Ferguson 723.02 – Engine ECU: Camshaft Speed Sensor Signal Issue
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit is detecting that the number and/or position of the camshaft pulses is implausible or that there is a signal deviation between the crankshaft and camshaft that is too large.

Check the cause
Check the camshaft speed sensor wiring harness and connector for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
Test the sensor wiring for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to high voltage.
Use a multimeter to check the nominal resistance in the sensor coil (a healthy inductive rotation sensor on these engines typically reads between 1120 - 1530 Ohms at 20°C).
Verify that the engine timing is correct, as a large signal deviation between the crankshaft and camshaft can indicate a mechanical timing issue.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the sensor
Locate the camshaft speed sensor on the engine block, on the upper front face of the camshaft.
Disconnect sensor
Unplug the electrical connector from the camshaft speed sensor.
Remove sensor
Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor to the engine block. Carefully pull the sensor straight out of its bore.
Clean mounting surface
Wipe the mounting surface and the bore on the engine block clean of any oil, dirt, or debris to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat.
Install new sensor
Insert the new camshaft speed sensor into the bore. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Reconnect wiring
Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor, ensuring it clicks and locks into place.
Clear codes and test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic service tool (connected via the CAN bus) to clear the 000723.02 fault code from the ECU memory. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
