Massey Ferguson 723.08 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Camshaft Speed Sensor Signal Issue

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has detected that the signal deviation between the crankshaft speed sensor and the camshaft speed sensor is too large. The evaluation error is triggered if either of these two sensor signals is defective, or if the signals are out of phase with each other.

Check the cause

  1. Check engine running conditions for rapid engine speed changes due to rough engine running (e.g., fuel supply issues, poor fuel quality, or misfiring) which can falsely trigger this phase deviation fault

  2. Inspect wiring and connectors between the camshaft speed sensor and the Engine ECU. Verify ECU pins A37 (Analog Input) and A52 (Ground) for broken wires, corrosion, or short circuits

  3. Test sensor resistance by disconnecting the camshaft speed sensor and measuring nominal coil resistance across its terminals. At 20°C (68°F), resistance should be between 774 and 946 Ohms

  4. Check the crankshaft speed sensor to ensure it is securely mounted, free of debris, and functioning correctly, as the fault measures deviation between the cam and crank sensors

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    The camshaft speed sensor is located on the engine front cover / timing gear housing.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the housing. Carefully pull the sensor straight out.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean engine oil. Insert the sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specifications.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic service tool (such as AGCO WinEEM3, WinEEM4, or EST) to clear the inactive 000723.08 / SPN 723 FMI 8 fault code from the ECU memory.
