Massey Ferguson E729.04 – Engine ECU: Engine Intake Heater Low Voltage

The controller has detected that the voltage in the intake air grid heater circuit is below the normal operating range. This typically indicates a short to ground in the wiring harness, a defective grid heater relay, or a failed grid heater element.

   Save the error log, erase it, and restart the ECU. Check if the fault returns during the next drive/start cycle.

   Inspect the grid heater wiring harness for chafing, bare wires, or a short to ground.

   Inspect the connectors and pin contact surfaces at the relay and the heater for oxidation or corrosion.

   Test the grid heater relay (often located on the left side of the engine or in the engine electric center) by measuring the output voltage when the ECU commands the heater on.

   Test the intake grid heater element for proper resistance and continuity to rule out an internal short.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery negative cable to ensure safety, as the grid heater circuit carries high amperage (often 70+ amps).

   Clean Connections

   If diagnostic checks revealed oxidized pins at the relay or heater element, clean the contacts thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner and a wire brush. Re-test the system.

   Replace the Relay

   If faulty, locate the grid heater relay. Unbolt the relay from its mounting bracket, disconnect the 4-pin connector and heavy-gauge power terminals, and install the new relay. Ensure the ground connection is clean and tight.

   Replace the Grid Heater

   If the heater element itself is shorted, remove the intake air piping connected to the intake manifold. Unbolt the grid heater assembly from the manifold. Install the new grid heater using new gaskets to prevent boost leaks. Torque bolts to OEM specifications and reattach the heavy-gauge power wire.

   Verify Repair

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition to the cold-start preheat position. Verify that the E729.04 code does not return and that the engine preheats successfully.
