8.01.22

Massey Ferguson 8.01.22 – HITCH: Rear Hitch Position Sensor Signal Voltage Issue

Issue description

The control module is receiving an implausible signal, an out-of-range voltage (either too high or too low), or no signal at all from the rear hitch rotary position sensor (potentiometer).

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wire harness leading from the HITCH controller to the rear hitch position sensor for rub points, pinched wires, or damaged insulation.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and check for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture inside the connector.

  3. Turn the key ON and test the reference voltage at the sensor connector. This should be a steady 5V or 8.5V reference signal from the ECU.

  4. Using a multimeter, test the resistance of the rotary position sensor while manually moving the hitch linkage. The resistance should change smoothly without any dead spots or sudden drop-offs.

Repair steps

  1. Lower the hitch

Ensure the rear 3-point hitch is fully lowered and the tractor is turned off to remove any mechanical tension.

  2. Remove the sensor

Unplug the electrical connector and unbolt the rotary position sensor from the rear linkage assembly.

  3. Install the new sensor

Mount the replacement rotary position sensor, ensuring the mechanical linkage/rod is properly aligned with the sensor's rotational axis.

  4. Reconnect wiring

Plug the harness back in and secure it away from moving linkage parts.

  5. Calibrate the hitch

After replacing the sensor, perform a hitch calibration procedure via the tractor's Datatronic display or a specific sequence of the hitch controls to teach the HITCH controller the new minimum (fully lowered) and maximum (fully raised) voltage values of the new sensor.
