8.01.28

Massey Ferguson 8.01.28 – HITCH: Issue With Signal From Hitch Draft Control Dial

Issue description

This code indicates that the electronic control unit is detecting an erratic, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal from the draft control dial (potentiometer/switch) located in the cab. The draft control dial is used by the operator to set the sensitivity of the rear 3-point hitch draft control system. When this signal fails, the tractor cannot accurately determine the operator's desired draft setting, which can lead to erratic hitch behavior or the system locking out to prevent damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the draft control dial in the right-hand console for physical damage, sticking, or heavy dirt ingress.

  2. Check the wiring harness connecting the draft control dial to the HITCH module. Look for chafed wires, loose pins, or corrosion in the connectors, as a loose connection often mimics a bad sensor.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the potentiometer/switch. Check for a smooth change in resistance or voltage as the dial is turned from minimum to maximum. Dead spots, erratic jumps, or infinite resistance indicate a failed internal potentiometer.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Remove console panel

Carefully remove the interior trim or console panel surrounding the draft control dial in the cab's right-hand console.

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the draft control switch.

  4. Remove faulty dial

Unclip or unscrew the faulty draft control dial from the console panel.

  5. Install new switch

Install the new draft control switch into the panel and secure it.

  6. Reconnect wiring harness

Reconnect the electrical wiring harness, ensuring the connector clicks into place securely.

  7. Reinstall trim panels

    Reinstall the console trim panels.

  8. Reconnect battery

Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position.

  9. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display.

  10. Perform calibration

Perform a hitch module calibration/initialization cycle. Most electronic systems will need a brief initialization cycle after replacement to learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum signal range. Test the 3-point hitch draft operation to confirm the repair.
