Massey Ferguson 8.01.31 – HITCH: Issue With Signal From Rear Hitch Right Draft Pin (HITCH)
Issue description
The tractor's electronic draft control (EDC) system relies on load-sensing pins connecting the lower lift arms to the tractor chassis. These pins contain internal strain gauges or magnetoelastic coils that measure the shear force (draft load) applied by ground-engaging implements. This fault code indicates that the signal from the right-hand draft pin is missing, out of range, or erratic. When this occurs, the system cannot accurately calculate the implement's load, which typically results in the tractor disabling automatic draft control and restricting rear hitch functions to a safe manual mode.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the 3-pin connector at the right draft pin for moisture intrusion, dirt, and physical damage.
Test the circuit to verify the pin is receiving reference voltage (8.5V or 5V from the Hitch ECU) and has a solid ground.
Perform a swap test by swapping the left and right draft pin connectors. If the fault code changes to the left side (08.01.32), the sensor has failed. If it remains 8.01.31, the wiring harness or Hitch ECU is at fault.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the rear hitch completely to remove all tension from the lower link arms, and turn off the ignition.
Disconnect Electronics
Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the right draft sensing pin.
Remove Hardware
Remove the retaining bolt, locking plate, or snap ring securing the draft pin to the tractor's rear axle bracket.
Extract the Pin
Slide the right lower link arm slightly to free the pin, and pull the old draft pin out of the bore.
Clean the Bore
Thoroughly clean the mounting bore to ensure the new pin will seat correctly without binding, which can cause false load readings.
Install the New Pin
Insert the new load sensing pin. Crucial Step: Ensure the alignment notch or flat edge on the pin is positioned exactly as specified (usually facing a specific direction dictated by the locking plate). The internal sensors are directional; if the pin is rotated incorrectly, it will not measure the horizontal draft force properly.
Reassembly
Reinstall the retaining hardware and reconnect the electrical connector (ensure the weather seal is intact).
Calibration
A newly installed draft pin must be calibrated. Use the tractor's dashboard interface or a diagnostic tool to perform the Hitch/Draft Calibration procedure. This teaches the Hitch ECU the 'zero-load' baseline voltage of the new sensor.
