Massey Ferguson 8.01.61 – HITCH: Rear Linkage Lower Solenoid High Amp Draw

The control module has detected that the electrical current (amperage) flowing through the circuit for the rear hitch's lowering solenoid exceeds the maximum allowable limit. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted internal coil within the solenoid itself, or a failing solenoid that is drawing excessive power to operate.

   Wiring Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring from the HITCH module to the rear linkage lower solenoid. Look for rub points, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could be causing a short to ground.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the solenoid and inspect the connector pins for water ingress, corrosion, or damage that could bridge the connections.

   Coil Resistance Test: Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil. If the resistance reads near zero ohms, the coil has an internal dead short and must be replaced.

   Ground Integrity: Ensure the ground circuit for the valve block and module is clean and tight.

   Safety First

   Turn off the tractor, lower the rear hitch to the ground (if possible) to relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Find the rear linkage lower solenoid on the rear hydraulic control valve block (usually located at the rear of the tractor near the hitch assembly).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system when the valve is opened.

   Remove the Coil/Valve

   Remove the retaining nut or bolt at the end of the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the cartridge. (Note: If replacing the entire valve cartridge, use a wrench to unscrew the cartridge from the valve block).

   Install the New Part

   Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem. If installing a new cartridge, ensure the new O-rings are lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid and fully seated before threading it into the block.

   Secure

   Tighten the retaining nut/bolt to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the rear hitch lowering function to ensure smooth operation and verify that the fault code has cleared.
