Massey Ferguson 8.02.23 – HITCH Controller: Rear Hitch Depth Control Dial Signal Voltage Issue (HITCH)

The tractor's control system relies on a potentiometer (the depth control dial) to set the working depth of the rear 3-point hitch. This dial sends a variable signal voltage (typically between 0 and 5 volts) to the controller. Fault code 8.02.23 is triggered when the controller detects that the signal voltage from this dial is out of the expected range (either too high, too low, or erratic). This usually points to a failed potentiometer, a damaged wiring harness, or a loose connection. When this code is active, the system will typically lock out the Electronic Lift Control (ELC) console for safety, preventing the hitch from moving.

   Verify the tractor's battery is fully charged (around 12.6V) and the alternator is charging properly. Low system voltage can cause false sensor codes.

   Access the right-hand ELC console/armrest. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the depth control dial for rub points, pinched wires, or disconnected plugs.

   Unplug the connector at the potentiometer. Check for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion. Sometimes a loose connection mimics a bad sensor.

   Back-probe the sensor signal wire with a multimeter. Slowly turn the depth control dial from minimum to maximum. The voltage should sweep smoothly (typically 0V to 5V) without dropping out or spiking. If the voltage jumps erratically or reads 0V/5V constantly, the potentiometer is internally faulty.

   If the sensor tests fine, check for continuity on the signal, power, and ground wires between the dial's connector and the HITCH controller harness to rule out an open or shorted circuit.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the ELC Panel

   Carefully remove the trim panels or retaining screws on the right-hand armrest or side console to expose the underside of the Electronic Lift Control panel.

   Remove the Faulty Dial

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the depth control potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the dial assembly to the console plastic.

   Install the New Part

   Insert the new potentiometer into the console, secure it with the retaining hardware, and reattach the control knob.

   Reconnect Wiring

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

   Reinstall the console trim panels and reconnect the battery.

   Turn the ignition on. Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard Datatronic/SIS screen to clear the 8.02.23 fault code.

   Reactivate the ELC system. This often requires cycling the main lift arm up/down switch past its detents to initialize the new sensor's range and unlock the console. Test the hitch to ensure it responds accurately to the depth dial.
