8.02.28

Massey Ferguson 8.02.28 – Rear Hitch Module (HITCH): Issue With Signal From Hitch Draft Control Dial (HITCH)

Issue description

The controller is receiving an erratic, out-of-range (voltage too high or too low), or missing signal from the draft control potentiometer dial. Because the signal is invalid, the tractor's computer cannot determine the operator's desired draft setting for the 3-point hitch, which will typically disable automatic draft adjustments or lock out the rear hitch entirely as a safety precaution.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the draft control dial for corrosion, backed-out pins, or physical damage.

  2. Using a multimeter, check for a steady 5V reference voltage and a good ground at the dial's connector with the key ON.

  3. Check the signal wire for continuity between the dial connector and the Rear Hitch Module, ensuring there is no short to ground or short to power.

  4. Measure the resistance across the draft control dial itself while slowly turning it. The resistance should change smoothly; if it drops out, spikes, or reads open circuit (OL), the potentiometer is internally faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the 3-point hitch (if possible), turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the retaining screws for the trim panel on the right-hand armrest or side console where the draft control dial is mounted. Carefully lift the panel to expose the underside of the controls.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the draft control dial. Squeeze the retaining tabs or remove the mounting screws holding the switch assembly to the console panel, and pull the old dial out.

  4. Installation

Insert the new draft control dial into the console panel until it clicks into place or secure it with the mounting screws.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness connector to the new dial. Reinstall the console trim panel and secure it with its screws.

  6. Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and clear the stored fault codes. Note: Depending on the specific model, replacing a hitch potentiometer may require a Rear Hitch Module Calibration procedure to be run via the tractor's diagnostic interface or dashboard menu so the module can learn the new minimum and maximum voltage values of the dial.
