Massey Ferguson 8.02.61 – HITCH module: Rear Linkage Lower Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the solenoid valve responsible for lowering the rear 3-point hitch is drawing excessive current (exceeding 4 Amps), which trips the ECU's internal protection.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the HITCH module and the rear linkage lower solenoid for chafed wires causing a short to ground or short to power.

  2. Disconnect the lower solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or melting, which can cause high resistance or bridging.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the lower solenoid coil to check for an internal short (drawing more than 4 Amps).

  4. Manually push in on the valve solenoid from the rear of the tractor to ensure the mechanical spool valve isn't seized, which can cause the coil to overheat and short out.

  5. If wiring and solenoid test fine, verify the HITCH module for an internal fault (a known issue where the module fails to regulate the circuit).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent further damage to the HITCH module.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the rear linkage lower proportional solenoid valve on the hydraulic control block at the rear of the tractor.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the lower solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Remove the retaining flange or nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve body. Gently drive off the solenoid valve coil by applying light pressure with a screwdriver between the valve and the control unit.

  5. Install New Solenoid

    Check the condition of the O-rings on the valve base. Position and manually drive the new solenoid valve into its housing until seated. Place the flange on the solenoid base and tighten the retaining screw/nut (standard torque for MF proportional valves is typically 5.4 - 8.1 Nm for the nut, or 8 - 11 Nm for the flange screw).

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Cycle the tractor's key and use the up/down hitch switch to clear the startup safety lockout. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the stored 8.02.61 DTC.

  7. Test

    Operate the rear hitch to confirm the lower function works smoothly without tripping the code.
