Massey Ferguson 8.X.28 – HITCH module: Issue With Signal From Hitch Draft Control Dial

The signal coming from the rear-linkage intermix lever potentiometer (the dial used to set the draft control sensitivity) is incorrect, out of range, or missing. The controller is receiving a voltage reading that does not match the expected parameters for the dial's physical position.

   Check the physical linkage/knob of the draft control dial on the console. Ensure the knob is not broken, spinning freely on the potentiometer shaft, or physically jammed.

   Access the back of the draft control dial. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture. Test the harness for continuity back to the HITCH module to rule out an open circuit or a short to ground/power.

   Unplug the potentiometer and use a multimeter to test its resistance. As you turn the dial, the resistance should change smoothly and linearly. If the reading jumps erratically, drops to zero, or shows an open circuit (infinite resistance), the potentiometer has an internal failure.

   Verify that the tractor's battery voltage is stable (between 11V and 16V). The Autotronic linkage controller can throw erroneous sensor codes if system voltage drops too low.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Console

   Remove the trim panels or armrest cover to access the underside of the rear linkage control console.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the draft control potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws securing the potentiometer to the console panel, and pull the dial/sensor assembly out.

   Install the New Part

   Transfer the dial knob to the new potentiometer (if not included). Install the new sensor into the console, ensuring the alignment tab sits in the correct slot so the sensor doesn't spin. Secure it with the retaining nut.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in and reassemble the console trim. Reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Turn the ignition on and clear the stored fault codes. Depending on the specific tractor series, you may need to perform a hydraulic lift autocalibration procedure via the dash display so the HITCH module can learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new potentiometer.
