Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at the drop rate dial (underside of armrest/console) for chafed wires, pulled pins, or corrosion
Perform a voltage supply test by disconnecting the potentiometer and checking for an 8.5V or 10V reference voltage from the HITCH ECU with the ignition ON
Verify the sensor has a solid ground connection back to the ECU
Conduct a signal sweep test by back-probing the signal wire and slowly turning the dial; voltage should scale smoothly without dropouts or erratic jumps
Check the signal wire for continuity, ensuring there is no open circuit or short-to-ground between the potentiometer and the HITCH controller
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Console
Carefully pry up or unbolt the trim panel on the right-hand armrest or side console where the hitch controls are located.
Remove the Potentiometer
Locate the drop rate control dial (X898). Disconnect its electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or clips holding the potentiometer to the console plastic and pull the dial/switch assembly out.
Install the New Part
Insert the new OEM potentiometer into the console, secure it, and plug in the electrical connector.
Reassemble and Test
Reinstall the console trim and reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and clear the stored 8.X.29 fault code.
Functional Verification
Start the tractor, raise the 3-point hitch, and adjust the drop rate dial while lowering the hitch to confirm the lowering speed responds correctly to the dial's position.
