8.X.51

Massey Ferguson 8.X.51 – HITCH controller (EHR / ELC): Issue With Signal From Rear Hitch Left Draft Pin

Issue description

The electronic signal coming from the rear-linkage draft sensor is saturated or out of its expected voltage range (2.5 V to 7.5 V). When the signal exceeds this threshold or shorts, the controller flags the sensor data as incorrect, and the hitch may default to a degraded mode (relying solely on the right draft pin) or lock out draft control entirely.

Check the cause

  1. Test the wire harness for damaged wires, chafing, or loose connectors leading to the left draft pin sensor.

  2. Probe the sensor connector (Pin 1 is reference ground, Pin 2 is signal output) and verify if the signal output is outside the normal 2.5 V to 7.5 V range.

  3. Check the error code list to see if both draft pin sensors have failed or just the left one. If only the left pin sensor failed, the system will use the right pin to operate in a degraded draft mode.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the left rear hitch draft pin sensor. Depending on the model (e.g., MF 4700/5700 vs MF 6700), it will be located either in the bracket of the top link or in the lower draft arms.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the draft pin sensor.

  4. Removal

Remove the retaining hardware (brackets, retaining rings, or clips) holding the draft pin in place. Slide the faulty draft pin sensor out of the linkage bracket.

  5. Installation

Lubricate the new draft pin if required by the service manual, slide it into the bracket, and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reconnect & Calibrate

Reconnect the electrical harness. Power on the tractor, clear the fault codes from the EHR/HITCH controller, and perform a rear hitch potentiometer/draft sensor calibration via the tractor's diagnostic interface.
