Massey Ferguson 91 – Armrest Autotronic 5: Transmission lever - short circuit to 0 V

Issue description

The control module is detecting a dead short to ground (0 Volts) on the signal circuit for the transmission control lever (X106). Because the signal voltage has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold, the module cannot determine the lever's position.

Check the cause

  1. Remove the armrest cladding and visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the X106 transmission lever for chafed wires rubbing against the metal armrest frame.

  2. Disconnect the transmission lever and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage that could bridge the signal wire to the ground wire.

  3. With the lever disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the signal wire on the harness side and a known good ground. If there is continuity, the short is in the armrest wiring harness. If there is no continuity, the short is internal to the transmission lever's potentiometer.

  4. Turn the key ON and verify that the lever is receiving its proper reference voltage (typically 5V or 10V) from the Autotronic 5 module.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Disassemble the Armrest

    Remove the retaining screws (typically M4x12 and M5x16) securing the upper cladding/cover of the multifunction armrest.

  3. Remove the Lever Assembly

    Locate the transmission lever (joystick) assembly. Disconnect its electrical connector (X106).

  4. Unbolt the Support

    Remove the mounting hardware (studs/screws) securing the lever's support plate and potentiometer bracket to the armrest chassis.

  5. Install the New Part

    Fit the new transmission lever/potentiometer assembly into the armrest bracket. Secure the mounting hardware and plug in the electrical connector.

  6. Reassemble

    Reinstall the armrest cladding and reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

    After replacing the lever, perform a transmission lever calibration using a dealer diagnostic tool (like the AGCO EDT) or a specific onboard dash sequence to prevent code D 158.
