Massey Ferguson 97.31 – ECU: Water In Fuel Sensor, Check Filters (ECU) / Water in Fuel Detected

The Water In Fuel (WIF) sensor has detected that water has accumulated in the fuel filter/water separator bowl above a predetermined quantity threshold.

   Inspect the water separator bowl (located at the bottom of the fuel filter) for visible water accumulation.

   Evaluate your fuel source. If water has to be drained from the filters frequently, find out the reason for the high water content in the fuel (e.g., contaminated storage tank).

   Ensure the WIF sensor connector is securely seated and the wiring is not damaged.

   Drain the water

   Locate the fuel filter/water separator assembly. Open the drain valve at the lower part of the filter bowl to drain the trapped water.

   Prime and test

   Close the drain valve, prime the fuel system if necessary, and cycle the key to see if the code clears.

   Replace the filter

   If the code persists after draining, or if the filter is heavily contaminated, replace the fuel filter/water separator element.

   Replace the sensor

   If the bowl is completely free of water and the code remains active, the Water In Fuel sensor itself has likely failed and must be replaced.
