Massey Ferguson 974.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Throttle Sensor Voltage Issue

The control unit measures a voltage in excess of 4.7 volts at the signal input of the hand throttle potentiometer (sensor B96). This indicates a short circuit to a positive power lead, an open circuit (broken wire), or a problem with the ground connection in the potentiometer's circuit.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading from the hand throttle to the ECU/ACU for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or damaged connectors.

   Test the ground pin at the throttle potentiometer connector for continuity to the chassis/ECU ground (a bad ground will cause the signal voltage to float high).

   Verify that the sensor is receiving a steady 5V supply from the ECU.

   Disconnect the sensor and measure the voltage on the signal wire with the key ON. If it reads 12V or system voltage, there is a short to a positive lead in the harness.

   Perform a sweep test: plug the sensor back in and back-probe the signal wire. Slowly move the hand throttle from idle to full throttle. The voltage should scale smoothly between 0.5V and 4.5V. If it spikes above 4.7V or reads a constant 5V, the potentiometer has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the trim panels on the right-hand operator console/armrest to expose the hand throttle assembly and its wiring.

   Disconnect the Harness

   Unplug the electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer. Inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-out terminals; clean if necessary.

   Replace the Sensor

   If diagnostic tests proved the sensor is faulty, unbolt the retaining screws holding the potentiometer switch to the throttle lever mechanism. Install the new OEM throttle sensor and secure the fasteners.

   Reassemble and Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor. Reinstall the console trim panels and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool - EDT) to clear the 000974.03 inactive fault code. Some models may require a brief throttle calibration routine via the dashboard or service tool to learn the new idle and max throttle voltage limits.

   Test Operation

   Start the engine and verify that the hand throttle responds smoothly without throwing a warning code.
