Massey Ferguson A.10.2A – Vehicle Control Module or Mid Mount Valve Module / Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 1 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the circuit or mechanical operation of the first external remote hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition typically involves a failure in the spool position sensor, a faulty control solenoid, restricted hydraulic flow (due to dirty oil or blocked filters), or a mechanically seized spool valve (often caused by rusted detents).

Check the cause

  1. Check hydraulic oil for contamination (dirt or water) and inspect the hydraulic/transmission filter for blockages (restricted flow cause)

  2. Inspect the mechanical linkage and detents on the spool valve for rust, which can cause the valve to stick or seize (mechanical cause)

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors going to External Hydraulic Valve 1 for damaged pins or corrosion, and test the spool position sensor voltage (electrical/sensor cause)

  4. Check for internal pressure loss caused by damaged O-rings, leaking control valves, or faulty check valves if hydraulics are weak or dropping

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Park the tractor on a flat surface, lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the hydraulic remote levers/switches to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Access the Valve Block

    Locate External Hydraulic Valve 1, which is typically found at the rear remote stack or the mid-mount valve block.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Carefully unplug the electrical connectors for the valve's solenoid and the spool position sensor.

  4. Remove the Faulty Valve

    Unbolt the specific spool valve section from the hydraulic lift cover or valve stack. Be prepared to catch residual hydraulic fluid.

  5. Clean or Replace

    If the issue is simply rusted detents, you may be able to clean and lubricate the mechanism. Otherwise, install the replacement hydraulic valve section or position sensor. Ensure all mating surfaces are clean and new O-rings are used to prevent internal pressure loss.

  6. Reassembly

    Bolt the valve back into the stack to the manufacturer's torque specifications and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Service Fluids

    Replace the hydraulic/transmission filter and top up the hydraulic oil with the correct OEM-specified fluid.

  8. Test and Clear Codes

    Start the tractor, test the remote valve for proper operation (check for leaks and verify implement speed/holding pressure), and use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the A.10.2A fault code from the ECU.
