Massey Ferguson A.13.23 – Mid Mount Valve Module or Dash/Hydraulic Controller: External Hydraulic Valve 1 Issue
Issue description
Fault within the first auxiliary hydraulic remote valve circuit. Typically logged as a connection problem on the hydraulic valve, an issue with the spool position sensor value, or a failure in the valve's calibration.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to External Hydraulic Valve 1 and its spool position sensor for continuity, corrosion, or physical damage
Perform a Spool Leakage Check (Pressure Test): Position the hydraulic control handle in Neutral, connect a hydraulic hand pump (e.g., test kit N-1100) to one of the control valve ports, and pressurize to 2,500 psi. If the port cannot hold pressure, oil is leaking around the spool, indicating a damaged spool/bore, a failed centering spring, or foreign matter stuck in the valve
Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to check if the valve simply lost its calibration parameters
Repair steps
Relieve System Pressure
Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve any residual pressure in the system.
Clean and Inspect
If the valve failed the spool leakage check, remove the valve assembly. Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble the valve to ensure no contamination is causing the spool to stick.
Retest
Repeat the 2,500 psi pressure check. If no pressure can be obtained after cleaning, the internal bore is damaged, and the entire valve assembly must be replaced.
Valve/Sensor Replacement
Disconnect the hoses from the pressure and tank ports. Remove the faulty External Hydraulic Valve 1 or the attached spool position sensor. When installing the new valve spool and detent into the valve body, use grease to ease the assembly. Thread the pipe/fittings into the back of the valve. Tighten carefully (do not use an impact wrench to avoid breaking the valve threads). If repairing the relief valve body, torque the hex nut to 20-25 ft-lbs.
Re-Calibration
Once the new valve or sensor is installed, connect a diagnostic tool to re-calibrate the hydraulic valves.
Fluid Maintenance
Top up the hydraulic fluid using OEM UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil, e.g., 10W40) and replace the hydraulic filter to prevent future contamination.
