A.1X.23

Massey Ferguson A.1X.23 – Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 1 Issue

Issue description

This code indicates a malfunction or communication failure involving the first external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). Related sub-codes in this family often point to issues with the spool position sensor value, a physical blockage, or a loss of communication between the valve module and the tractor's control system.

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition for dark, burnt, or milky appearance indicating contamination

  2. Verify if the hydraulic filter has been changed within the last 300–500 service hours, as a clogged filter restricts flow

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connectors going to External Valve 1 and its spool position sensor for corrosion, frayed wires, or loose pins

  4. Perform a pressure test using a hydraulic pressure gauge on the rear remote couplers to verify the valve is receiving and holding correct system pressure (2200–3600 psi)

  5. Inspect the external control valves, pressure accumulators, and quick couplers for visible leaks

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor. Cycle the hydraulic control levers/joysticks to relieve any residual pressure in the system.

  2. Drain/Contain Fluid

Place a catch pan under the rear remote valve block.

  3. Disconnect Electronics

Carefully unplug the electrical harness from the External Hydraulic Valve 1 solenoid and the spool position sensor.

  4. Remove Hydraulic Lines

Disconnect the hydraulic hoses routed to the #1 valve section. Cap the lines immediately to prevent dirt from entering the system.

  5. Unbolt the Valve

Remove the retaining bolts holding the #1 spool valve section to the main hydraulic block.

  6. Install the New Valve

Mount the replacement valve section, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated. Torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect

Reattach the hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical connectors.

  8. Service the Fluid

Replace the hydraulic filter (mandatory when opening the system) and top off the hydraulic reservoir with OEM-approved UTTO fluid.

  9. Test and Calibrate

Start the tractor, allow the fluid to reach operating temperature (around 60°C/132°F), and test the remote valve for proper operation and leaks. Clear the DTC using a compatible diagnostic tool.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • External Hydraulic Valve 1 (Spool Valve Assembly)

Must be matched to the tractor's VIN/Serial via an AGCO dealer

  • Spool Position Sensor

Often integrated into the electronic valve head

  • Hydraulic Filter

OEM AGCO filter (Do not use aftermarket substitutes for EHC systems, as they increase the risk of contamination)

  • Hydraulic Fluid

OEM UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil), typically 10W40 grade
