A.20.13

Massey Ferguson A.20.13 – Hydraulic Control Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the second rear remote hydraulic spool valve circuit. This code is typically triggered by an electrical connection problem (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power), an implausible spool position sensor value, or mechanical sticking/jamming of the valve preventing it from reaching the commanded position.

Check the cause

  1. Check UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) hydraulic fluid level and condition, and inspect for a blocked hydraulic/transmission filter.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at External Valve 2 for rubbed wires, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause an open circuit or poor ground.

  3. Measure the resistance of the valve's solenoid coil to ensure it is within OEM specification and not shorted.

  4. Check for mechanical binding by observing if the valve is physically stuck or if there are external leaks around the valve block.

  5. Monitor live data for the 'Spool Position Sensor Value' using a diagnostic tool to verify if the sensor is reading the valve's movement accurately.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the rear remote valve block area to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during repair.

  2. Resolve Electrical Faults

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the harness or replace the damaged connector. Clear the code and retest.

  3. Free a Stuck Valve

If the valve is mechanically sticking, you can sometimes free it by manually moving the pump control valve lever back and forth. If it remains stuck, the valve slice must be removed.

  4. Replace the Spool Slice / Sensor

If the solenoid, position sensor, or internal spool is internally failed, depressurize the hydraulic system and unbolt the faulty Electric Spool Slice (Valve 2) from the valve stack. Install the replacement unit.

  5. Service the Fluid

Replace the hydraulic filter and top off the UTTO fluid to ensure clean operation.

  6. Reprogramming

Note that installing a new electronic spool slice on modern Massey Ferguson tractors usually requires the new valve to be calibrated/programmed to the tractor's ECU using a dealer diagnostic tool.
