Massey Ferguson A.20.1A – Mid Mount Valve Module or Dash/Tractor ECU: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue
Issue description
Malfunction in the second external hydraulic spool valve circuit. The underlying condition is typically an electrical or mechanical failure within the valve itself, such as a faulty spool position sensor or a sticking directional control valve.

Check the cause
Check UTTO hydraulic fluid level and inspect for dark color, burnt smell, or milky appearance indicating water contamination
Inspect the hydraulic filter to ensure it has been changed within the last 300–500 hours, as contamination can restrict flow
Perform a system pressure test at the rear remotes (normal is 2200–3600 psi) to verify if the issue is isolated to Valve 2
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors from the Dash to the Mid Mount Valve Module, checking the spool position sensor and solenoid coil for proper voltage and resistance
Attempt to manually actuate the valve (if equipped with a manual override) to check for mechanical binding or a stuck spool
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the tractor, lower all implements to the ground, and cycle the hydraulic levers/joystick to relieve all residual pressure in the system.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the external hydraulic valve block (typically mounted on the rear lift cover or mid-mount block depending on the loader configuration).
Disconnect Electricals
Carefully unplug the wiring harness connectors from the Valve 2 solenoid and the spool position sensor.
Remove Hydraulic Lines
Disconnect the hydraulic hoses and quick-release couplings from the Valve 2 slice. Cap the lines immediately to prevent contamination.
Unbolt the Spool Valve
Remove the mounting bolts securing the Valve 2 'slice' to the main hydraulic manifold/base plate.
Install the Replacement Part
Fit the new electric spool slice or position sensor. Ensure all O-rings and seals are properly seated.
Reassembly
Bolt the valve back into the stack, reconnect the hydraulic lines, and plug in the electrical connectors.
Fluid and Filter
If the fluid was contaminated, drain the system, replace the hydraulic filter, and refill with OEM-spec UTTO fluid (e.g., 10W40).
Calibration
Note that new electric spool slices often need to be programmed/calibrated to the tractor's ECU using a dealer diagnostic tool.
