A.20.1E

Massey Ferguson A.20.1E – Mid Mount Valve Module or Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the second external remote hydraulic valve circuit. The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem to the valve's solenoid, an out-of-range spool position sensor value, or a mechanical sticking/jamming of the valve spool that prevents it from directing hydraulic fluid properly.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level is correct and the fluid is not contaminated. A clogged hydraulic filter can cause pressure drops that trigger valve codes.

  2. Inspect External Valve 2 (usually mounted on the lift cover or rear remote stack) for visible fluid leaks, which indicate blown O-rings or seal wear.

  3. Check the wiring harness and quick-disconnect plugs going to Valve 2. Look for corrosion, frayed wires, or loose connections, as connection drops are a primary cause of this code.

  4. Use a multimeter to verify the voltage of the spool position sensor. If the sensor is sending erratic values to the module, the valve will throw an error.

  5. Check if the valve is physically stuck. Manually moving the pump control valve lever back and forth can sometimes release a stuck spool caused by debris.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the tractor, and actuate the hydraulic levers to relieve all residual system pressure.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the hydraulic lift cover and the external valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic pump chamber.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical harness connected to the Valve 2 solenoid and spool position sensor.

  4. Remove the Valve

Remove the bolts securing the external valve to the base plate on the hydraulic lift cover.

  5. Protect the Standpipe

As you lift the valve off, ensure that the internal hydraulic standpipe is not dislodged from its seat in the hydraulic pump.

  6. Inspect/Replace

Inspect the base plate O-rings. If the valve spool is scored or the solenoid is dead, replace the entire valve assembly. If it is just leaking, replace the O-rings.

  7. Reinstallation

Fit the new valve onto the base plate, ensuring the standpipe is correctly located into its seat. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.

  8. Refill and Bleed

Top up the hydraulic system with fresh UTTO fluid, start the tractor, and cycle the remote valve several times to bleed air from the system.
