A.20.20

Massey Ferguson A.20.20 – Mid Mount Valve Module and Dash: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

A malfunction in the second remote hydraulic spool valve circuit (directional control valve), typically caused by a connection problem, an issue with the spool position sensor value, or mechanical failure preventing the spool from cleanly moving.

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic oil filter and transmission filter for blockages, and inspect the hydraulic fluid for contamination (dirty oil).

  2. Check the wiring harness and connectors at the hydraulic valve for corrosion or loose connections, as the code often flags a connection problem or sensor value error.

  3. Perform a spool leakage check: Position the control handle in Neutral, connect a hydraulic hand pump to one of the control valve ports, and pressurize to 2500 psi. If the port cannot be pressurized, oil is leaking around the spool.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system and ensure the tractor is turned off.

  2. Removal

Remove the bolts securing the cap on the hydraulic lift cover and detach it from the standpipe, ensuring the standpipe is not dislodged from its seat in the hydraulic pump.

  3. Disconnect Valve

Remove the bolts securing the control valve to the base plate. Separate the valve and base section.

  4. Disassembly & Cleaning

Disassemble the valve to clean and inspect it. Look for scoring on the spool or spool bore and verify the centering spring returns the spool to neutral.

  5. Re-test

Reassemble the valve with new seals/O-rings and repeat the 2500 psi leakage check. If no pressure can be obtained, the valve assembly is permanently damaged and must be replaced.

  6. Installation

Fit the standpipe into the inlet port of the base plate. Secure the base plate to the lift cover, ensuring the standpipe is correctly located into its seat on the hydraulic pump.

  7. Final Assembly

Secure the control valve to the base plate using the mounting bolts. Reconnect all hydraulic lines and the spool position sensor electrical connector.
