A.20.23

Massey Ferguson A.20.23 – onboard diagnostic system / main vehicle ECU: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Indicates a fault, connection problem, or sensor reading error associated with the #2 external hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition is typically a failure in the spool position sensor value or an electrical connection problem on the hydraulic valve itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to External Hydraulic Valve 2 for corrosion, loose pins, or broken wires (connection problems are a primary trigger)

  2. Verify the spool position sensor value using a compatible diagnostic tool to check for sensor reading errors

  3. Inspect the electric spool valve control switch inside the cab to ensure it is sending the correct signal to the valve

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the hydraulic valves.

  2. Access the Valve Block

Locate the external hydraulic valve block (usually mounted at the rear of the tractor near the lift cover).

  3. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around Valve 2 to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic check revealed a wiring issue, repair or replace the damaged connector/harness.

  5. Replace the Sensor/Slice

If the spool position sensor or the electric spool slice is faulty, unbolt the defective slice/sensor from the valve stack.

  6. Install New Components

Install the replacement electric spool slice or sensor. Ensure all O-rings are lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid before seating them to prevent leaks.

  7. Reassemble and Reconnect

Torque all bolts to OEM specifications and reconnect the electrical harnesses.

  8. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery, use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the A.20.23 / 0A.2X.23 DTC, and perform any necessary spool valve calibrations required by the ECU.
