A.21.13

Massey Ferguson A.21.13 – Hydraulic Control Module or Mid Mount Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Indicates a malfunction within the second external hydraulic remote valve circuit. This is typically triggered by a spool position sensor value error, a solenoid failure, or a physical connection problem on the hydraulic valve itself.

Check the cause

  1. Fluid Level & Condition: Verify that the hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and free of contamination. Low fluid or a failing hydraulic pump can cause pressure drops that trigger valve errors.

  2. Electrical Connections: Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 2 (located at the rear remote block). Look for corrosion, bent pins, or loose connections.

  3. Spool Position Sensor Test: Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to read the live data from the spool position sensor. If the value is out of range or static when the valve is commanded, the sensor or solenoid is likely faulty.

  4. Mechanical Binding: Check if the valve spool is physically stuck due to debris or internal wear.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Lower all implements to the ground. Turn off the tractor engine and cycle the hydraulic levers/controls to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Disconnect Electricals

Locate External Hydraulic Valve 2 on the rear hydraulic block. Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector from the valve's solenoid and spool position sensor.

  3. Remove Hoses

Mark the hydraulic hoses connected to the valve for proper reassembly, then disconnect them. Have a catch pan ready for residual hydraulic fluid.

  4. Remove the Valve

Unbolt the external hydraulic valve assembly from the main hydraulic block.

  5. Replace or Rebuild

Depending on the diagnosis, either install a completely new external hydraulic valve assembly or rebuild the existing valve using an OEM O-ring/seal kit.

  6. Reinstallation

Mount the new/rebuilt valve to the block and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the hydraulic hoses and the electrical harness.

  7. Bleed and Clear

Top off the hydraulic fluid. Start the tractor and cycle the remote valve several times to bleed any trapped air from the system. Finally, use a diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.21.13 DTC from the system.
