A.21.21

Massey Ferguson A.21.21: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

There is a fault within the circuit or operation of the second external auxiliary hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition is typically a connection problem to the hydraulic valve, an out-of-range spool position sensor value, or an internal mechanical failure/leak within the valve itself preventing it from holding the correct pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid level and inspect its condition (look for dark, burnt, or milky appearance indicating water contamination or loss of viscosity).

  2. Inspect the hydraulic filter for partial blockages that could be restricting flow to the system.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to External Hydraulic Valve 2 for any connection problems, frayed wires, or corrosion.

  4. Use a diagnostic tool to check the spool position sensor value for Valve 2 to determine if it is reading out of range.

  5. Test the system pressure with a hydraulic gauge to pinpoint whether the issue is isolated to the valve failing to hold correct pressure, or if it is a broader pump/restriction issue.

Repair steps

  1. Address Fluid/Filter Issues

If the fluid is contaminated or degraded, perform a complete fluid change and flush the system. Replace the hydraulic filter (recommended every 300–500 hours).

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a connection problem, clean the electrical contacts on the Valve 2 solenoid/sensor and repair any frayed wires in the harness.

  3. Replace Sensor

If the spool position sensor is returning erratic values and the wiring is intact, replace the spool position sensor.

  4. Replace the Valve

If the valve is leaking externally, aerating the system, or failing to hold pressure despite good fluid and electrical connections, safely relieve the hydraulic system pressure and remove the External Hydraulic Valve 2 assembly. Install the replacement valve, torque to OEM specifications, and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness.

  5. Test

Top off the hydraulic fluid, start the tractor, and actuate the remote valve to ensure proper pressure and no leaks. Clear the DTC using a compatible diagnostic tool.
