Massey Ferguson A.21.23 – Tractor ECU or EHC: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue
Issue description
The onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction in the #2 auxiliary/remote hydraulic spool valve circuit. The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem on the hydraulic valve, an out-of-range spool position sensor value, or a mechanical failure preventing the valve from properly directing pressurized fluid to external implements.

Check the cause
Verify the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and check if the fluid is dark, smells burnt, or has a milky appearance indicating water contamination
Inspect the external control valves, quick couplers, and pressure accumulators for external leaks
Inspect the wiring harness, pins, and connectors at External Valve 2 for corrosion, damage, or loose connections
Use a hydraulic pressure gauge at the rear quick couplers to test system pressure (should be between 2200 psi and 3600 psi)
Ensure the hydraulic filter is not clogged or contaminated
Repair steps
Relieve System Pressure
Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic control levers/joystick to relieve all residual pressure in the implement and tractor hydraulic circuits.
Drain/Flush Fluid
If the diagnostic check revealed burnt or milky fluid, drain the hydraulic reservoir completely and flush the system.
Replace Hydraulic Filter
Remove the old hydraulic filter housing, clean the mating surface, and install a new OEM hydraulic filter. This is mandatory if the system has been aerated or contaminated.
Service or Replace the Valve
Disconnect the electrical harness from External Hydraulic Valve 2 and unbolt the valve block from the rear remote stack. Replace the electronic actuator/sensor cap if the issue is a failed spool position sensor or a burnt solenoid. If the valve itself is internally scored or failing, the valve section must be rebuilt by a specialist or replaced entirely.
Reassemble and Refill
Bolt the new or repaired valve back into the stack, torque to OEM specifications, and reconnect the electrical harness. Refill the system with fresh UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil).
Bleed the System
Start the tractor and slowly cycle the hydraulic remotes to bleed air from the system.
Clear Codes
Use a compatible diagnostic interface tool to clear the A.21.23 / 0A.2X.23 fault code from the ECU.
