A.22.18

Massey Ferguson A.22.18 – Mid Mount Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction within the tractor's secondary external hydraulic spool valve circuit, which can be caused by a mechanical failure (such as a stuck valve), a loss of system pressure, or an electrical fault such as a connection problem or an issue with the spool position sensor value.

Check the cause

  1. Check UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) fluid level and condition (look for dark, burnt, or milky appearance indicating water contamination)

  2. Inspect the hydraulic filter for heavy contamination or partial blockages that could restrict flow

  3. Visually inspect external control valves, hoses, quick couplers, and seals for leaks

  4. Perform a pressure test using a hydraulic gauge to determine if the issue is the pump, the valve itself, or a restriction

  5. Test the electrical wiring harness, connectors, and the spool position sensor for damage or corrosion

Repair steps

  1. Relieve System Pressure

Ensure the tractor is off and hydraulic pressure is relieved before opening the system.

  2. Fluid and Filter Maintenance

If the fluid is degraded, drain the hydraulic fluid and replace the hydraulic filter. Refill with OEM-spec UTTO fluid (e.g., Massey Ferguson Permatran).

  3. Address Leaks

Replace any leaking hoses, O-rings, or quick couplers connected to Valve 2.

  4. Valve Service/Replacement

If the valve is mechanically stuck, remove the spool valve assembly. Clean the valve chamber. If the internal seals are damaged or the valve body is scored, replace the external hydraulic spool valve.

  5. Sensor Replacement

If the diagnostic points to the spool position sensor and the mechanical valve is fine, replace the sensor and verify the electrical connection to the Valve Module.

  6. System Bleed and Test

After reassembly, run the tractor to warm up the fluid, cycle the hydraulic remotes to bleed air from the system, and clear the DTC using a compatible diagnostic tool.
