A.22.20

Massey Ferguson A.22.20 – Hydraulic Control Module or Mid Mount Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction within the second external hydraulic remote valve circuit. The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem on the hydraulic valve solenoid, an erratic/missing spool position sensor value, or an internal mechanical failure (such as a damaged spool bore, a failed centering spring, or foreign contamination) preventing the valve from returning to neutral or holding pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to External Hydraulic Valve 2 for shorts, corrosion, or connection problems

  2. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to read the spool position sensor value and verify it is communicating with the module

  3. Perform a spool leakage check: Position the hydraulic control handle in 'Neutral', connect a hydraulic hand pump (e.g., test kit N-1100) to the control valve port, and pressurize to 2500 psi

  4. If the port cannot be pressurized during the leakage check, verify if oil is leaking around the spool, indicating a damaged spool/bore, a failing centering spring, or trapped foreign matter

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing.

  2. Wiring Repair

If the diagnostic check revealed a wiring fault at the solenoid or spool position sensor, repair or replace the damaged connector/harness.

  3. Valve Disassembly & Cleaning

If the spool leakage check failed, remove the External Hydraulic Valve 2 assembly. Disassemble, clean, and inspect the valve to ensure no contamination or foreign matter is stuck inside.

  4. Re-test

Reassemble the cleaned valve and repeat the 2500 psi hydraulic hand pump check.

  5. Valve Replacement

If no pressure can be obtained after cleaning, the internal spool or bore is permanently damaged. You must replace the entire hydraulic spool valve assembly.

  6. Clear Codes

Reinstall the valve, reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors. Connect a Massey Ferguson compatible diagnostic tool to the tractor's diagnostic port to clear the 0A.22.20 error code and test the hydraulic function.
