Massey Ferguson A.22.24 – Tractor Main ECU or Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue
Issue description
Malfunction in the second rear remote hydraulic spool valve. Usually an electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve failure caused by a faulty spool position sensor, a communication error with the valve module, or a physical jam/restriction inside the valve slice preventing the spool from reaching its commanded position.

Check the cause
Check the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition. Contaminated oil or blocked transmission/hydraulic filters are the leading cause of sticking spool valves.
Inspect the wiring harness and the M12 5-pin connector going to External Hydraulic Valve 2. Look for corrosion, damaged wires, or loose pins.
Verify that the spool position sensor (Hall effect sensor) is receiving the correct operating voltage (typically 8 to 32 VDC) and has a solid ground.
If physically possible and safe, swap the electrical connections between Valve 1 and Valve 2. If the fault code changes to Valve 1, the issue is in the wiring harness or ECU. If the code remains A.22.24, the issue is internal to the Valve 2 slice or its sensor.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic pressure by lowering all implements and cycling the hydraulic controls.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the exterior of the rear remote valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.
Disconnect Electronics
Unplug the electrical harness from the Valve 2 solenoid and the spool position sensor.
Remove the Valve Slice
Unbolt the tie-rods holding the hydraulic valve stack together and carefully extract the Valve 2 slice.
Address the Spool/Sensor
If mechanically jammed: remove the rear cap, extract the detent mechanism/spring, and slide the spool out for cleaning and O-ring replacement. If the sensor has failed: replace the entire valve slice, as recalibration can only be done at the factory.
Reassembly
Install the new or cleaned valve slice, torque the stack tie-rods to OEM specifications, and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness.
Fluid Maintenance
Replace the hydraulic filter and top up the hydraulic fluid with OEM-spec UTTO fluid to prevent a recurrence.
Clear Codes
Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the A.22.24 fault code and test the remote valve operation.
