A.23.19

Massey Ferguson A.23.19 – Hydraulic Control Unit / Mid Mount Valve Module or Tractor Control Unit (TCU): External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

Fault within the circuit or mechanical operation of the second external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). Triggered by an out-of-range spool position sensor value, a connection problem or open/short circuit on the hydraulic valve solenoid, or mechanical sticking/jamming of the valve spool due to debris or internal wear.

Check the cause

  1. Check the rear remote stack (Valve 2) for visible hydraulic fluid leaks, which can cause pressure drops and erratic sensor readings.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Valve 2 solenoid and spool position sensor. Look for rub points, frayed wires, or loose connections.

  3. Disconnect the Valve 2 connector and check for corrosion or bent pins. Use a multimeter to test the coil resistance of the solenoid and verify ground integrity.

  4. Ensure the valve isn't physically jammed by debris. Swap the electrical connections between Valve 1 and Valve 2 (if the harness allows) to see if the fault code follows the wiring or stays with the physical valve.

  5. Verify that the hydraulic fluid level is correct and the hydraulic filters are not clogged, as low pressure can trigger valve faults.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor, lower all implements to the ground, and cycle the hydraulic levers/joystick to relieve residual hydraulic pressure. Disconnect the battery.

  2. Access the Valve Block

Locate the external hydraulic valve stack at the rear of the tractor (or mid-mount block, depending on loader configuration). Identify Valve 2.

  3. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  4. Disconnect Electrical & Hydraulic Lines

Unplug the wiring harness from the Valve 2 solenoid and position sensor. Mark and disconnect the hydraulic hoses.

  5. Remove the Valve

Unbolt the spool valve section from the main distribution block.

  6. Rebuild or Replace

If rebuilding: Disassemble the spool valve, clean the internal bore, and replace the O-rings and seals using a spool valve body kit. If replacing: Install the new spool valve assembly or the faulty solenoid/sensor.

  7. Reassembly

Bolt the valve back into the stack, torque to OEM specifications, and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors.

  8. Test and Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and check for leaks. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the A.23.19 DTC and cycle the valve to ensure proper operation.
