A.23.22

Massey Ferguson A.23.22 – Hydraulic Control Module / Tractor Management System: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue

Issue description

The onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction in the second auxiliary remote hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem at the valve, a failure of the valve's solenoid, or an out-of-range reading from the spool position sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition; look for dark or milky fluid indicating contamination or a clogged filter.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 2 for corrosion, broken wires, or loose connections.

  3. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to check the spool position sensor values; erratic or missing values indicate failed internal electronics or sensor.

  4. Inspect the valve block and quick couplers for external leaks, which can cause pressure drops.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic levers to relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the valve modules.

  3. Locate the Valve

Locate External Hydraulic Valve 2 on the rear auxiliary valve stack.

  4. Disconnect Electricals

Carefully unplug the electrical harness from the valve's solenoid and spool position sensor.

  5. Remove the Valve

Unbolt the faulty valve section from the hydraulic manifold block.

  6. Install the Replacement

Clean the mating surface on the manifold. Install the new hydraulic valve section, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated to prevent leaks.

  7. Reassemble

Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications and reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Fluid Maintenance

Top off the hydraulic fluid to the proper level. If the fluid is degraded or the filter is near its 300-500 hour service interval, replace the hydraulic filter.

  9. Calibration

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and check for leaks. You must use a Massey Ferguson-compatible diagnostic interface to clear the DTCs and calibrate the new spool valve.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • External Hydraulic Valve 2 / Auxiliary Spool Valve

Often identified as a Bosch Rexroth SB23 hydraulic valve. Exact OEM part numbers vary depending on the specific tractor model and whether it is a mechanical or electro-hydraulic EHC valve.

  • Hydraulic Filter

Generic replacement required during hydraulic service.

  • Hydraulic Fluid

    Universal Tractor Transmission Oil (UTTO).
