Massey Ferguson A.23.27 – SMS (Spool Management System) or Autotronic: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue
Issue description
Malfunction associated with the tractor's second remote hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition can be electrical (such as a solenoid circuit open or shorted to ground), mechanical (a stuck valve due to debris or internal wear), or a calibration issue with the electrohydraulic controls.

Check the cause
Inspect the hydraulic oil for contamination (dirt or debris) and check the hydraulic/transmission filters for restricted flow
Check the solenoid connector at Valve 2 for harness rub points, test coil resistance, and verify ground integrity to rule out electrical shorts or open circuits
Check if the valve is physically sticking or jamming due to internal wear or debris
Use the Massey Ferguson EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool) to check if the position of the joystick is visible to the system and verify calibration
Repair steps
Inspect and Service Fluids
Begin by checking the hydraulic fluid level and quality. If the oil is dirty or the filter is old, replace the hydraulic/transmission filter and fluid.
Wiring Repair
If the electrical inspection revealed damaged wires or a corroded connector at the Valve 2 solenoid, repair the harness and clean the contacts. Clear the code and test operation.
Recalibrate the System
Connect the Massey Ferguson EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool). Navigate to the SMS/Spool Valve settings and perform a calibration procedure for the joystick and the electrohydraulic spool valve.
Valve Cleaning/Rebuild
If the valve is mechanically stuck, remove the spool valve assembly. Clean the valve chamber thoroughly. You may be able to rebuild it using an OEM spool valve repair kit.
Component Replacement
If the electrohydraulic valve slice is internally damaged, shorted, or cannot be calibrated, replace the entire electric spool slice. Note: A new electric spool slice will need to be programmed to the tractor using the EDT after installation.
