Massey Ferguson A.23.28 – Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 2 Issue
Issue description
Malfunction or communication failure with the second external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem, a failure of the spool position sensor, or a fault within the electric spool slice solenoid itself.

Check the cause
Check the wiring harness and electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 2 at the rear valve stack for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.
Use a compatible diagnostic tool to read the live data for the 'Spool Position Sensor Value' on Valve 2. If the value is erratic or out of range, the sensor or the slice itself has failed.
Verify the transmission/hydraulic oil level using the gauge at the rear of the center housing and check the filter clogging indicator to ensure the hydraulic circuit is not starved of oil.
Swap the electrical connection from Valve 2 to Valve 1 or 3 (if identical) to see if the fault code follows the wiring or stays with the physical valve slice.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the hydraulic remote levers/buttons to relieve residual pressure in the lines.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the rear hydraulic valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the wiring harness from the Valve 2 electric spool slice.
Remove Hydraulic Lines
Disconnect the hydraulic hoses and unions attached to Valve 2. Cap the lines immediately.
Remove the Spool Slice
Unbolt the tie-rods holding the valve stack together. Carefully slide out the faulty Electric Spool Slice (Valve 2), ensuring you do not lose or damage the O-rings between the slices.
Install the New Valve
Position the new O-rings, insert the new electric spool slice, and torque the stack tie-rods to the manufacturer's specification.
Reassemble
Reconnect the hydraulic unions and the electrical harness.
Fluid Check
Top up the transmission/hydraulic oil as some fluid will be lost during the swap.
Calibration
The new electric spool slice must be programmed and calibrated to the tractor's ECU using a dealer diagnostic tool so the controller can learn the new spool position sensor limits.
