Massey Ferguson A.31.11 – Onboard Diagnostic System / Main Implement/Hydraulic Controller: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue
Issue description
Malfunction, electrical fault, or communication error with the third external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). The system has detected that the valve is either not responding to commands, has an open/short circuit in its solenoid coil, or is experiencing a mechanical/hydraulic pressure deviation.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Valve 3 for rub points, damaged wires, or corrosion in the connector
Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the Valve 3 solenoid coil for an open circuit or a short to ground
Verify that the solenoid is receiving the correct reference voltage from the controller when the valve is commanded to open/close
Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition, as low fluid or clogged hydraulic filters can cause pressure drops that trigger valve performance codes
Perform a swap test: swap the electrical connector from Valve 3 to Valve 2. If the fault code changes to Valve 2, the issue is in the wiring/controller. If the fault remains on Valve 3, the solenoid or valve itself is faulty
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic remote levers/buttons to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the external hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the wiring harness connector from the Valve 3 solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid/Valve
Depending on the specific model, you may be able to unbolt just the electronic solenoid actuator from the top/side of the spool valve. If the mechanical spool is sticking, the entire Valve 3 slice must be unbolted from the hydraulic stack.
Install the New Component
Fit the new solenoid or valve slice. Ensure all O-rings between the valve slices are properly seated and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid.
Reassemble and Torque
Torque the valve block tie-bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
Reconnect and Test
Reconnect the electrical harness. Start the tractor, top up the hydraulic fluid if any was lost, and test the operation of Remote 3.
Clear Codes
Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.31.11 code from the system.
Parts you might need
(4)External Hydraulic Valve Assembly (Spool Valve)
Generic OEM replacement.
Hydraulic Valve Solenoid Actuator
Often available separately if the mechanical valve is fine.
Hydraulic Valve O-Ring / Seal Kit
195561M1Required when splitting the valve block. Specific spool block O-rings will require your exact serial number.
Hydraulic Filter
Recommended to replace if fluid contamination caused the valve to stick.
