A.31.1A

Massey Ferguson A.31.1A – Autotronic module, linkage calculator, or dedicated electronic hydraulic/valve controller: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

Indicates that the tractor's onboard diagnostic system has detected a fault in the circuit or operation of the number 3 electrohydraulic remote spool valve. The underlying condition is typically an electrical circuit issue (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power at the solenoid), a sensor signal issue, or a mechanical/hydraulic condition where the valve is stuck, jammed, or experiencing low pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Check the solenoid connector on External Valve 3 for harness rub points, chafed wires, and ground integrity. Measure the coil resistance of the solenoid.

  2. Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition for dirty or contaminated oil. Inspect the hydraulic/transmission filter for blockages.

  3. Check around the valve block for visible fluid leaks, which can cause pressure drops and reduced performance.

  4. Check if the valve is physically sticking or jamming due to internal wear or debris by manually moving the pump control valve lever back and forth.

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

Clear the DTC using a compatible diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard screen (e.g., holding the up arrow key while turning the key on and pushing the clutch, depending on the model) to see if the code returns due to a temporary voltage drop.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal an open circuit or short, repair the damaged wiring harness or clean the corroded connector pins at Valve 3.

  3. Replace Solenoid Coil

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil fails the resistance test, replace the solenoid coil on Valve 3.

  4. Clean or Rebuild Valve

If the valve is sticking due to debris, remove the spool valve, clean it thoroughly, and rebuild it using an OEM repair kit (which includes new seals and O-rings).

  5. Replace Spool Valve

If the valve has failed internally, is heavily worn, or leaks excessively, replace the entire External Hydraulic Valve 3 assembly.

  6. Service Hydraulics

If the oil was contaminated, drain the hydraulic fluid, replace the hydraulic/transmission filters, and refill with clean, spec-compliant hydraulic fluid.
