A.31.20

Massey Ferguson A.31.20: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

A malfunction associated with the third external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem (such as a short or open circuit to the valve's solenoid), a mechanically sticking spool valve, or an internal failure of the valve itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness and electrical connector going to External Hydraulic Valve 3 for corrosion, broken wires, or loose connections.

  2. Verify if the valve is mechanically sticking in one direction or leaking fluid externally.

  3. Ensure the tractor's hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and free of debris.

  4. Attempt to clear the DTC using a compatible diagnostic tool to see if the code is an active hard fault or an intermittent historical error.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and safely relieve all hydraulic system pressure before starting work.

  2. Disconnect Electricals

Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid on External Hydraulic Valve 3.

  3. Remove Lines

Carefully disconnect the hydraulic hoses/lines connected to the valve block. Have a catch pan ready for residual hydraulic fluid.

  4. Dismount the Valve

Unbolt the faulty spool valve assembly from the hydraulic valve stack or lift cover.

  5. Install New/Rebuilt Valve

Mount the replacement spool valve or install the rebuilt valve using new O-rings and gaskets. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the hydraulic lines and plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid.

  7. Bleed and Test

Start the tractor, operate the valve to bleed air from the hydraulic system, and check for leaks. Clear the 0A.31.20 fault code with a diagnostic tool.
